| About the Arts Council of Mansfield | |
History of the Spring Arts Festival With this in mind the council initiated the Mt. Buller Easter Arts Walk in 1997 when four venues showcased the work of Mansfield artists. Each exhibition was opened with a level of pomp and fanfare, champagne bubbles and exquisite food. Visitors made their way around the village with excited anticipation, the walk culminating in an auction at the final venue. The Easter Arts Walk continued for the following three years, at which stage the Arts Council decided to bring the event back to Mansfield to create greater exposure for the artists and provide improved access for a larger audience. In 2001 the Spring Arts Walk found a home in a variety of exhibition spaces in a new precinct. The walls of the Mansfield Hotel and many restaurants highlighted the talents of our local artists for an enlightened audience. In the true flavour of the Arts in its broadest sense, actors and musicians enriched the opening night with amusing performances and delightful music. As an aside, and much to the council’s delight the Mt. Buller Resort Management Board have, in their wisdom and no doubt flushed with the success of the Arts Walk, elected to continue with their own artistic enterprise. The Mt Buller Easter Art Exhibition has grown to be a prestigious event on the national art calendar attracting well known artists with the promise of substantial awards thanks to very generous sponsors. Over the years the Spring Arts Walk has undergone several changes in an effort to expand on the nature of the venue and accommodate the needs of a diverse group of artists. In a sense the Arts Council of Mansfield managed to de-mystify the Arts. Individuals and groups, no longer threatened by the notion that ‘art’ is for an elite section of our community, came on board to participate in the Walk. New sponsors surfaced, the number of activities multiplied and the nature of events broadened. It was inevitable that the High Country Festival and the Spring Arts Walk would come together as the two flowed naturally from one to the other. As a combined event the celebration of the culture and history of Mansfield has reached an all time high as a study of the 2009 High Country Festival & Spring Arts program will attest. The Arts Council
of Mansfield is keen to welcome new members. A membership form can be
downloaded and posted with the membership fee of either $20 family/group
or $15 single membership. We began as a small group more than fifteen years ago, and are now an Incorporated body. The committee is elected at the AGM and committee meetings are generally held once a month. Our group has a fun time together, it is really rewarding to be part of a team focused on “getting art into the community”, you don’t have to be a practising artist to be a member. We organise and promote a number of projects each year, including Spring Arts, which includes the popular Art Walk, the Three Faces Portrait Art Prize and Median to Rare sculpture exhibition. We are involved in community art, music, performance, workshops and demonstrations. The Arts Council of Mansfield invites everyone to join our group.
